Library The Wahta Mohawks Public Library offers a variety of resources from self-help books to children's literature. The 700 square foot library looks out over Webster Lake and provides a great setting to research or just read.
The Wahta Mohawk Library has a Children's area as well as a large collection of native themed books. The Library is also a CAP internet access site with public internet access. This Community Access Project is financed by Industry Canada.
A collection of self help books and audiovisual resources is also available.

Land / Housing Wahta Mohawk Territory is 15000 acres (6070 Ha) in size. Since the land claim settlement has been finalized, our land base will be increased by 8300 acres. Much of this land is held in common but some is held by certificate of possession.
Transfers and sales of lands between citizens is registered by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, but the process should be initiated by contacting Karen Sahanatien.
There are approximately 80 leases on reserve, which are for seasonal use only. Currently, all leases are owned by private citizens. The lands duties include assisting members with land transfers, maintaining land and lease files and submitting survey requests to INAC.
We recieve two housing subsidies per year for on reserve building. All funds requried to finish the home is secured by way of bank loan, personal savings or private loan. All applicants must submit a credit check and/or finanical statements to demonstrate they have the financial ability to complete the home. Renovations and RRAP programs are also available.
Wahta Mohawks has senior and family apartments for rent. Applications are available at the office and are reviewed regularly. Steady employment and references are required to be considered. Top of Page

Social Services/ Employment Counsellor Kristal Berwick is the Social Services and Employment Counsellor, her duties include:
Ontario Works Support is available when all other sources have been exhausted and unavailable. Case loads at this time are presently low but can fluctuate between 5 and 8 cases per month. Each individual will have a full application done and then it is calculated for any entitlement that the client may or may not receive.
Employment and Training Funding for this program is supported by Kagita Mikam. Kagita Mikam is Algonquin for "Path to Wisdom". As the employment counsellor my targeted clients are aboriginals that are out of school, unemployed or underemployed. Some of the programs that are offered are; purchase of training, targeted wage subsidy, mobile assistance, self employment assistance, summer youth initiative and stay in school initiative. Finance The Wahta Finance Office deals with the day-to-day aspects of the business including financial reporting, payroll, invoicing and Accounts Receivable. The Financial Officer maintains all accounting and financial records for Wahta Mohawks.
Shirley Sahanatien deals with Accounts Payable. She has lived in Wahta for most of her life, is married with four children and five grandchildren, has served as a Wahta Councillor for three terms, and has been employed by Wahta in different positions for many years. She makes all cheques, receives and deposits all incoming cheques, does cheque reconciliation, G.S.T. reports and any other related duties. Top of Page |
